Archaeological collection with numismatics has been present in the City Museum ever since it was founded. Its first manager was Professor Stjepan Vrbanovic. The overall collection numbers over 20,000 objects, most of which belong to antiquity.
In the course of one century of the collection's existence, the objects were collected through archaeological research (mostly of protective nature) acquisition and donations.
This collection is divided into four groups: Prehistory, Antiquity, Middle Ages, and Numismatics.
PREHISTORY Findings of prehistoric objects are mainly of individual nature, and most of them originate from the river of Kupa in the location between two city bridges: the Old Bridge and the New Bridge. One part of objects was found on Pogorelc, part of the town where Kupa meanders in which the pre-Roman Segestica is located.
ANTIQUITY Objects from the antiquity area are related to Roman Siscia. They are mostly collected during protective archaeological diggings in the area of the oldest part of the modern city along the left side of the river Kupa.
MIDDLE AGES There are a small number of objects originating from the Middle Ages. These are mainly accidental findings.
NUMISMATICS Numismatics, together with the antiquity collection, has the largest number of objects, over seven thousand pieces.
Prehistory, Middle Ages and numismatic collections are managed by the Senior Curator, Zdenko Burkowsky, and Professor of Archaeology and History. Antiquity collection is managed by Curator, Zoran Wiewegh, and Archaeologist.
