After the big migrations of the nations in which Croatians came to the area, Siscia, having resisted for a long time, again had an urban structure in the beginning of the 9th century and was a fortified town. Siscia was a residence of Ljudevit (812. - 823.), Duke of Pannonian Croatia, who after the death of Carlo the Great, decided to oppose the still superior army of the Frankish Empire. He tried to unite all Slavic tribes from Alps to Carpathian Mountains with a support in Byzantium but he was deemed to lose. The Frankish Empire was an uniting factor of Europe and a strong support to Pope.
Old Croatian period is best documented by a particle of cork oak with thatched ornaments (today kept in the Archaeological Museum in Zagreb), grapelike Bijelo Brdo earring and a heart-like adornment as well as a star-like earring worn in the area of Middle Age Croatian state during the time of national rulers of the Trpimirovic dynasty from mid 9th to end of 11th century.
